: a form of entrance in high-speed ships designed for the avoidance of wavemaking at high speeds, the stem being sharp at and below the waterline but expanding into a pear-shaped form as it nears the keel, the displacement necessary at this section of the hull thus being transferred in part to the vicinity of the keel where it becomes subject to the laws governing a totally submerged body
